January 1994
Were were somewhere and I asked Caryn if she wanted to race into the pool. She said she could not because her breasts would bounce too much in her bathing suit and that Mark M always wanted to race her. When she commented about her breasts, I told her to go on ahead.
The outdoor pool became an indoor one. Caren and I walked to the other side and saw a diving board and Jim Batty standing on it. He said we could swim all night then disappeared.
John came in and we got to the other side and went into the pool. The pool was crowded. Kris, the Korean girl, was there too.
A diving contest was started by John. Everyone got out and stood behind the board. Kris went first. She did a triple somersault with her legs spread and tucked and hit the water perfectly. She looked great in a purple one piece.
John went next and dove really high and perfectly. It was my turn. I was very scared. I did not like diving and I knew I had to go higher than John to win. I started my dive ten feet from the board. I ran, leaped onto the board. There was a wet cigar on the end of the board and I hit the springy end with all I could muster. I flew off the thing like a line drive towards the far
end of the pool. There was a volleyball net set up and I grabbed it as I sailed by. Everyone screamed. I sailed over the pool, past the concrete, then the net started to pull me back. I hit the water-head first, then my shoulders, then down to my waist- all the time being driven through the water by the pull of the net. It was pulling me on a collision course with the side of the pool. I was going to smash right into it. At the last second, I pulled up, sprung myself out of the water, flipped myself right side up, let go of the net, and came down standing on my feet at the far edge of the pool. I won the diving competition.
